Fred Stein. Modern Times

With a selection of some 30 original prints, the Kupferstich-Kabinett commemorates Fred Stein, the photographer born in 1909 in Dresden who left the city in 1933 under pressure from the Nazis. In Paris and New York, where he died in 1967, he created a significant body of work in the field of street and portrait photography.

Fred Stein. A photographer from Dresden

In both places, Fred Stein forged his own photographical path with a particular feel for the right moment and the formal innovations of the Neues Sehen, or "New Vision" movement.Stein's interest in the social issues of the time is the reason why his oeuvre is shaped not only by images of people from the city but also by social reporting. The group of his works encompassing portraits of artists and famous contemporaries includes some which are among the photographic icons of the twentieth century.

From April 28, the Stadtmuseum Dresden will pay tribute to Fred Stein in a comprehensive retrospective.
