Gregor Schmoll. Wunderblock – The World as Photography and Representation

The World as Photography and Representation

The permanent exhibition, “Concept and Encounter. The World around 1600” provides insight into the Saxon Electors’ Dresden Kunstkammer. As part of this permanent exibition, the Collection of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs presents alternating works from its own collection or selected external positions in the series “World Views on Paper.”

Module Text with Image

In two photographic series, Orbis Pictus and Wunderblock. The Dresden Collection (conceived especially for Dresden), the Vienna artist Gregor Schmoll (*1970) engages with the relationship between reality and imagination. The princely Kunstkammer’s identity as recepticle of knowledge and instrument of courtly ruling ambition serves as the ideal point of departure since Scholl’s works thematize the ways in which knowledge is created and deployed.
