Das Kupferstich-Kabinett
The works on show in the Kupferstich-Kabinett range in date from the beginnings of his career to the present day and include renowned projects such as “Ubu”, “Sibyl” and “Oh To Believe In Another World”. They centre on big woodcuts and etchings from his series “Triumphs and Laments”, which are pivotal to the festival theme of “Procession”.
Placing these works alongside items from the museum’s own collection, for example by Jacques Callot, Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein, demonstrates just how universal this theme is as a tradition in art history. It also indicates that Kentridge, a resident of South Africa, is deeply rooted in European printmaking and allows its echoes to reverberate in his works. Rounding off the display at the Kupferstich-Kabinett are two films which reveal the many potential pathways opened up by the printmaking of William Kentridge.
