William Kentridge. Listen to the Echo

It was a particular wish of the artist that his prints be exhibited in the Kupferstich-Kabinett. William Kentridge has been working in radically creative ways with a variety of printmaking techniques since the 1970s, integrating the works into broader projects. Printing is widely used to reproduce and disseminate material, but for Kentridge it is a way to visualise process and a platform for collaborative work with socio-political content.

Das Kupferstich-Kabinett

The works on show in the Kupferstich-Kabinett range in date from the beginnings of his career to the present day and include renowned projects such as “Ubu”, “Sibyl” and “Oh To Believe In Another World”. They centre on big woodcuts and etchings from his series “Triumphs and Laments”, which are pivotal to the festival theme of “Procession”.

Placing these works alongside items from the museum’s own collection, for example by Jacques Callot, Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein, demonstrates just how universal this theme is as a tradition in art history. It also indicates that Kentridge, a resident of South Africa, is deeply rooted in European printmaking and allows its echoes to reverberate in his works. Rounding off the display at the Kupferstich-Kabinett are two films which reveal the many potential pathways opened up by the printmaking of William Kentridge.

Im Studiolo

Two other films, this time from the series “Drawings for Protection” (1989–2020), are being screened in the Studiolo (Residenzschloss, Floor 1). They offer insights into the early practice which established William Kentridge’s reputation. He complemented these animated charcoal pictures by working up some of the drawings into large formats.
