Anhand von Kunstwerken aus

Works of art from seven centuries provide an insight into conservation practice and a profession that is constantly changing. The various sections of the exhibition, entitled Paper, Light, Water and Time present drawings and prints, some of which have never been shown before, from among the 500,000 works held in the collection. The focus is on restoration techniques, the materials and their state of preservation; photographs and video recordings also illustrate the processes and measures.

Den Auftakt bilden

The exhibition also incorporates the ongoing public conservation of the true-toscale preparatory drawings for the Dresden Fürstenzug (Procession of Princes). Created by Wilhelm Walther, these constitute by far the largest work in the collection, spanning a total of 100 metres in length and almost 4 metres in height. The cartoons are juxtaposed with seven composition drawings on loan from the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments: it was on the basis of these drawings, which have never been on public display before, that Wilhelm Walther squared up the composition to monumental proportions.
