Lost. Found. Returned.

A Drawing's Journey from Dresden and Back

A war-lost artwork from Dresden has resurfaced in Los Angeles. Before the work is returned, the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles is dedicating an exhibition to its history.

  • Dates 23/06/2026—18/10/2026

Otto Greiner

Entitled “Lost. Found. Returned. A Drawing’s Journey from Dresden and Back”, the exhibition traces the history of the drawing “Standing Male Nude” by the artist Otto Greiner. The exhibition was inspired by the research of two scholars at the Kupferstich-Kabinett, who were able to identify the work in 2025 in the collection of the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

Otto Greiner (1869–1916) was a German painter and graphic artist and is regarded as an important representative of Symbolism. The story of the lost drawing begins in 1892 in Rome, where Otto Greiner was staying for an extended period at the time. Two years later, the sheet was purchased for the Kupferstich-Kabinett in Dresden. It was eventually lost in the turmoil of the Second World War.

Mithilfe der Methoden

Using provenance research methods and through transatlantic collaboration with researchers at the Getty Research Institute, it has been possible to trace the drawing’s journey from Dresden to Los Angeles. Visitors can discover the role played by an ink stain and Cyrillic letters at various points throughout the exhibition.
