White Horses and Trenches
Expressionists newly collected
Since 2018, the Kupferstich-Kabinett Dresden has been home to the Dr. Kurt and Annelore Schulze Foundation (died 2004 and 2023). Three artists with a connection to Dresden are particularly prominent in the Hamburg couple‘s collection: Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884–1976) and Erich Heckel (1883–1970) were members of the Dresden artists‘ association Brücke, and Otto Dix (1891–1969) was a founding member of the Dresdner Sezession Gruppe 1919 and a professor at the Dresden Art Academy from 1927 until 1933.

Die Schau im Kupferstich-Kabinett
This exhibition in the Kupferstich-Kabinett presents highlights by these three artists in dialogue with Expressionist works from the museum‘s own holdings. The spectrum of themes ranges from the utopian beginnings of the movement – epitomised by Heckel’s White Horses – to the traumatic experiences of the First World War, illustrated by Dix’s unsparingly graphic sketches depicting war casualties and trenches.

The presentation also reflects the damage suffered by the Dresden collection before and during the Second World War. In the Kupferstich-Kabinett, 381 sheets were confiscated – including mainly Expressionist works, almost all of which are considered lost. It is thanks to the efforts of numerous institutions and museum employees, as well as the dedication of private collectors and patrons, that a new stock of Expressionist works on paper has been built up since 1945, and this is now harmoniously complemented by the new entries from the Schulze Foundation.
